Questions To Ask Your Vintage Jeweller Before Purchasing

3 min read

Vintage jewellery is in its own class when it comes to jewellery. It just has something special about it. Whether it’s about the history, the style or the love that has been locked into the stone, it’s just a beautiful item to hold and have. Many people are lucky enough to have family heirlooms that have been passed down from generations which they can pass down to their children.

For some though, one may need an alternative like having to scope out vintage jewellery through jewellers. Many jewellers are great, but there are always people that try to swindle a good deal. In this article, we will go through some questions to ask your jeweller before you buy. Whether this is vintage sapphire engagement rings or something special for yourself.

Is This Jewellery Vintage or Vintage Style?

Asking your jeweller whether the piece is actually vintage or just looks it is an essential question that should be asked first. This will give you a hint as to whether the piece is overpriced as well as helping you to make the decision whether this piece will be investable where you can get a return from it.

There are many pieces out there that are labelled as vintage but this could just be the style of the ring which is actually pretty new. Other times you may find that some pieces of the jewellery have been vintage but other parts are new. Check the small print and make sure you ask your jeweller.

Will This Piece Hold Its Value?

When investing in vintage jewellery it is always worth asking your jeweller (if they are reputable) whether the piece is going to hold its value. It is tempting to opt for the largest stone or the shiniest,  or even trending piece and many people are happy with this as long as they have spent a decent amount of money on it.

This won’t always do you justice though as some may pick a unique ring which they love but then later realise that nobody else likes it and you could lose money. Think of the bigger picture of understanding that you still need to sell this on at a later date. An example of this would be that somebody bought a vintage emerald ring, and then later realise that nobody wants that colour of emerald or the clarity is very poor.

Can This Ring Be Sized?

If you are wanting to purchase a ring to wear, It’s best to ask the jeweller whether the piece can be resized. There is no point in looking at it if you can’t wear it. Most rings can be sized up by two sizes and down also. You can’t usually go any lower or higher unless you are spending a significant amount of extra money and also making the ring look completely different. If the ring has delicate detailing on it or there is a fine point on it, you will not be able to resize the ring. This is an essential part of purchasing so make sure this is asked.
