Should You, Or Shouldn’t You Wear A Watch During The Coronavirus Pandemic?

The coronavirus pandemic has everybody washing their hands multiple times throughout the day and, for those of us that wear wristwatches, that might not be enough. Just as many medical workers are being told not to wear jewelry such as rings and bracelets, many people who are working either from home, or outside the home, are also adopting this trend. But what about our wristwatches? Could they be harbouring germs, bacteria and the coronavirus? Or is proper handwashing enough to protect us?

While research shows that we can’t help but touch our faces, it is more important than ever that we wash our hands thoroughly and regularly. With that being said, should we continue to wear our jewellery, including our wristwatches?

You Can Wear Your Wristwatch

For many of us, a stylish, men’s wristwatch is a useful extension of ourselves. We rely on our watch for the time, the date and, if it is a smartwatch, to stay connected with our friends, family and coworkers. Something very important during the coronavirus pandemic. But, just how much germs and bacteria could our watch hold, especially with it being farther away from the touch surfaces of our hands? Experts say, very little.

However, if your wristwatch is water resistant, it might be a good idea to at least rinse it thoroughly whenever you wash your hands. Just be sure to dry it just as thoroughly as you washed it to ensure that it continues to function properly.

World Health Organization Guidelines For Reducing Your Risk Of Infection

According to the World Health Organization, “you can reduce your risk of infection if you:

  • Clean hands frequently with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
  • Cover nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing with tissue or flexed elbow.
  • Avoid close contact (1 metre) with anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms.”

Protecting yourself from the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak is as simple as following the above World Health Organization guidelines and being prepared with the knowledge and supplies you need to stay healthy and safe.
