How to Make Your Own Zipper Pulls

3 min read

Zipper pulls are important functional parts of many jackets, backpacks, and purses. There are also a lot dresses that have zippers to ensure that the outfit will perfectly fit your body.

But there are times when low-quality zipper pulls may make zippers dysfunctional. In cases like this, your outdoor equipment or jacket might become unfit for you to carry or wear. It requires an immediate solution for you to continue using your things. Today, you will learn how to make your own zipper pulls. All you need to do is follow the steps below:

Choose a Cord

Before anything else, you need to choose a chord size. These cords are available in different sizes that range from 1.75 up to 4 millimeters. Make sure you choose a size based on your zipper’s size. The cord should able to pass through the zipper slider.

Pick a Style

You can make zipper pulls from cord in many different styles. It is recommended that you make a simple lanyard style one. This cord is going to dangle from the zipper with the string going through the slider to form a loop on one side with a closure on the other side. It is a style that fits most types of outdoor equipment.

Attach the Pull to the Slider

You can now proceed to cutting the cord to the specific length that you want and insert this through the slider to create simple knot at the tip of the slider. Identify the length of the loop you need then form a knot. You could try to make a half hitch first and secure this tightly by making a cow hitch.

Make a Cord End

After securing the cord to the zipper, it is now time for you to make a cord end. All you have to do is make a simple and plain overhand knot.  You can also go for a diamond or square knot if you like something fancier. You can also heat the ends to ensure that they don’t fray. It will also give you the assurance that the zipper pull won’t wear out.

Why Do Zippers Matter?

Everyone uses zippers every single day. Aside from trousers and jackets, zippers these days are also commonly found on handbags, laptop cases, tool bags, luggage, tents, and many other kinds of equipment.

There are so many types of zippers available in the market that no matter what your needs might be, it is very likely that there is already a zipper for it. There are special zippers made for babies, to prevent skin irritations, invisible zippers made for high end dresses, and so much more.

However, despite their importance, people outside the sewing and fashion industry often take zippers for granted that make it confusing for them once the need to purchase on arises.

If making your own zipper pulls is not your cup of tea, don’t worry because you can always buy  replacement zipper pulls to make things easier and simpler for you.
